Evansville IN Parent Loses Control and Attacks Referee at Elementary Basketball Game

What began as a delightful, friendly little kids’ basketball game on Saturday, 13 December 2025, turned into a full-blown affair. This was an elementary-level game between kids in 1st and 2nd grades at Highland Elementary School in Evansville, Indiana, where, instead of kids enjoying playing basketball, some parents saw something terrible.

According to DC Dashcamz News, Evansville police were dispatched to the school after receiving reports that parents were becoming aggressive during the game. What boggles my mind is that this is not even a competitive league, and these children are merely learning to dribble and do passing.

Witnesses said it all started when a foul was called on a kid. One adult- a parent and assistant coach apparently got very angry and instead of taking a step back, just went straight on to the court yelling at the referee.

Police say that the parent got in the referee’s face, and from there it escalated into a physical fight. Apparently, he chest-bumped and pushed the referee, according to eyewitness accounts, while other adults had to step in and pull him away as kids and families looked on.

I mean, what kind of psychic landscape does that create when they grow up? I remember my school games; even loud parents seemed intimidating.

Before finally exiting the gym, he upped the ante by threatening the referee. Reportedly saying to the referee, “I know where you live.” That part really got people mad because that’s not just anger; that’s downright scary.

The police arrived, but the person had already left. No one had any idea then whether there were charges against him.

Many were influenced by the scene posted on social media in Evansville. Parents, coaches, and even former refs posted their comments regarding the fracas. Teri Nash said, “I coached and reffed youth sports, and mostly the kids are fine.” But it is the parents who usually present the most significant problems. Honestly, I’ve seen this too. Kids want to play.

Others indicated how young these kids are. Autumn Rich said, It is simply a kids’ game. Scoring and fouls do not even matter. What really matters is that the kids enjoy. And I fully agree with that.

Some people couldn’t believe that adults take elementary sports so seriously. “Watherholt kind of threw her hands up to the skies to say: “Do people really care that much about little kids’ games?” Jessica Myers said: Children play this game; the result will not change their future, but how parents act does.

There had also been animosity directed against the coaches. Youth sports should be fun, a learning place, said Donna Ricketts. She went on to talk about years spent with local basketball leagues, where she told the kids had plenty of time to be serious later in middle school and high school. That coach acting like this is totally wrong, said Ricketts.

Many questions were raised as to why the parent was not arrested immediately. For instance, Rick D. Allerellie asked why police did not follow up since they already knew who the person was and where to find him. It is assault and should be treated as such because touching and threatening a referee is clearly assault.

Former referees shared their own stories. Kyle Klem said he has been officiating youth games for 13 years and has been followed to his car by angry parents who yell and threaten him. He said it happens while their kids are watching. He explained that this is why referees are quitting everywhere. The money is not worth the stress and fear over a grade school game. Reading that honestly made me understand why refs are so hard to find now.

A lot of people felt sorry for that child’s parents. Maralyn West bet the man’s son wished that daddy stayed home. The thought of how that child feels is heartbreaking, said Linda Ellington. That part hit me the most.

Most parents demand harsh penalties for the offense. According to Angela Evans, the parent should not be admitted to any Evansville schools except for meetings. Dena Crane Rowans said this parent should be banned from all future games and that it teaches kids the worst lesson about sportsmanship.

As of now, Evansville police have still not released any updates about charges or actions. However, one thing is thus evident from this. This has angered many people and worried them about how adults behave at youth sports events. It is a children’s game and not a place for adults to go out of control.
