So, Mallory Swanson’s got this cool mixed background, right? Her parents were both serious athletes, which probably helped her become the soccer star she is today.

She’s playing as a forward for the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL and also for the US women’s national soccer team (USWNT). She started with the USWNT when she was just 17, and since then, she’s been making waves in the soccer world, both locally and beyond.

Mallory Swanson: Representing and Inspiring

Mallory Swanson, along with her pals Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, are part of this crew they call “Triple Espresso.” They’re really pushing to open more doors for Black players in soccer. Brianna Scurry, who used to be a US goalkeeper, talked about them in an interview with Andscape’s Tamerra Griffin in July 2022.

In this article called “Black Women Are Balling Out, Making Their Impact on the US National Soccer Team,” Scurry said these girls are just awesome. She was amazed at how they’re really thinking about who they are, what they’re doing, and why they’re doing it. It’s like they’re way ahead of where she was at their age.

Mallory was born as Mallory Diane Pugh on April 29, 1998, in Littleton, Colorado. She grew up with her older sister, Brianna. Her dad, Horace Pugh, is African-American and was into Olympic-style sports. He also played football and ran track when he was younger. Her mom, Karen, is white and used to run marathons. So, yeah, Mallory grew up in a mixed family with a strong sports vibe.

In a Nike interview, Mallory said her parents didn’t go easy on her after a tough training session. Her dad even said that when she and her sister had a hard practice, they’d cry to the wrong people if they complained.

Mallory and her sister Brianna, who’s five years older, used to play soccer together in the Denver ‘burbs. Mallory always wanted to join Brianna and her friends, but they wouldn’t let her win. Most of the time, it was just Mallory against Brianna’s friends. She once said, “It was 2v1 and I was five years younger. It was so unfair. But it was good for me.”

Brianna’s soccer team made it to the state championship, and Mallory managed to get on the team’s bench. She’d sit there, watching every move and learning the game. Now, seeing Mallory shine for the USWNT is like a dream come true for the whole family. Her mom even said they worked hard and made a ton of sacrifices. It’s been a long road for everyone, but worth it.

Mallory’s strong support system has definitely helped her career take off, and she’s still out there making her parents proud.
