Marshall County Fans Slammed for Racist Comments Toward McCracken Player Miles During Basketball Game

This basketball game between Marshall County and McCracken County was supposed to be played on skill and teamwork. Unfortunately, ugly circumstances took over. During an adult crowd, some adults from Marshall County hurled racist remarks at the McCracken boys. One of the worst was when the star athlete Miles was called a “half-breed monkey”.

This kind of talk just ruined the atmosphere of the game. This was not kids saying stupid stuff. These were grown people. Having been to school basketball games for years, this hit me really hard. Sure, I’ve been in those loud gyms and heard trash talk, but racism hits differently. Once that line is crossed, nothing else matters in this game.

Miles is known for his calmness in the area and for his talent on the court. Instead of cheering for basketball, the adults chose to cheer for hate. That says a lot, not in an appropriate way.

The conversation gained momentum. Then, enter Lacey Nicole, who proclaimed to be a huge Tilghman supporter yet not affiliated with that rivalry, and decided to air the matter on Facebook. She, point-blank, said Marshall County ought to be ashamed. She praised Miles, recognizing him as one of the best in the region and among the most well-respected.

She called the racist comments “useless” and went on to admonish the grown-ups to “do better”. She was gracious enough to congratulate McCracken on the win while also showing love to Miles for having always been kind to her kid.

She wrote then that it had been a fun game to watch, declaring right there and then that she would always support McCracken whenever possible. That part honestly sounded like it came from deep inside.

After that post, people from many backgrounds began expressing their opinions. One person really went into deep issues facing Marshall County schools and leadership. They suggested racism has been swept under the rug for too long and spoke of how the system protects some at the expense of others. It came angrily and raw, but it expressed how fed up some people have become.

Someone else talked about their experiences growing up in Livingston County. They have stated for a long time that Marshall County has always felt racist and bullying. Reading that, I thought this isn’t a new problem; it’s probably just been hidden or ignored.

Several people chimed in with faithful remarks. They said that racism is sickening while reminding all that God has created all colors and sees all as one. That really affected me, as it showed how hurt the people were to see this going down.

Such incidents exemplify how racism can destroy sportsmanship. A basketball court should be a zone where talent is recognized, not skin color. When that kind of hatred is shouted out in public, it puts a blot on the entire community, and not just the ones who perpetrated it.

I’ve seen many games where the crowd goes wild, but this was different. This was about respect and dignity. This keeps going as long as people don’t call it out and stop it. And that would be the other loss, the loss not in the score of the game.
